Be kind to yourself

There is a saying that says “before you can love others, you need to love yourself.” I have come to notice that some people struggle with the loving themselves. I do not view loving yourself as having a big head and bigger ego. Instead, I view loving yourself as being kind to yourself. I see many people being kind to others, but hard on themselves.

We all have expectations for ourselves and what we want to achieve. Sometimes we miss our goals and expectations. These are the times that we need to be kind on ourselves. Continue to believe in ourselves and trust ourselves. We need to forgive, learn and move on….. It is good for your mental health to be kind to yourself.

One Person can make a Difference

We have a little dog at home called “Tiffy”. She has a good idea of what she wants and then seeks out someone to fulfill her plan. This includes feeding her, patting her, playing with her or someone to cuddle with. The one person that fulfills her needs at the time makes a difference. The difference of a dog that is happily fulfilled or a dog that is not.

It is the same with people. We all have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others on a day by day basis. We touch people’s lives nearly every day. Our interactions with others can either be a positive experience for them or a negative experience for them. By ensuring that we have a positive interaction with others we too can make a difference.

A quiet moment in the Crowd

I am not a fan of queues and even avoid crowds at time. I am not a good spectator, I am more a player in life. However, when I am in a crowd I have developed a way of zoning out. A way to sense the space in a crowd and to find a peaceful moment in the noise. This may not seem possible or normal and you would be right.

So, in essence, I have turned an experience that I do not favour into a treflective time…. We all have things in our life that are not our favoured times…. How can we change these times into something that works to our benefit? I have started to think when I am experiencing frustration, how can I use the moment for my benefit…. Sometimes it works and other times…. I still have room to grow.

Thinking Time

  • When do you get time to think?
  • Do you get a moment to yourself?
  • Where is your thinking place?

For me I think a lot when I travel alone. Whether it is by car, plane or public transport, these times all provide the perfect opportunity to relax, reflect and think…. There is nothing like sitting back on the a plane or bus, listening to a podcast and thinking. Thinking about my future, my dreams and my passions. Thinking about my past, reflecting on achievements and areas for improvement.

Then there is driving…. These days I prefer to be a passenger, however when alone and driving it is the perfect thinking time…. In particular as I travel down the highway….. Music on…. Crusing…. Thinking about about the future and the past… Reflecting on the achievements and areas for improvement. Planning my future aligned with my dreams and passions.

A Dog’s Greeting

I am not sure if it is the same for you, however when I approach a dog I normally get one of two responses. The most common is a friendly, happy greeting. A wagging tail and a sense of excitement to see me. The other response, seen less often, is a growling and aggressive dog. A dog that indicates that it wants to rip me in two.

We are not dissimilar to dogs. We too give off signals to others in our greetings and interactions. At times those signals may be of disinterest or aggression. Then at other times it is one of interest, care and love. We can choose what signals we give off to others. We can choose to be kind and loving or disinterested or aggressive.

  • What signal do you want to give off to others?

In the Driver’s Seat

The other day I was driving down the freeway and notice that everyone was slowing down…. As I got closer I found the cause of the slow down. There was a Police vehicle traveling at about 10km per hour below the speed limit. What was the result? You guessed it, everyone slowed down to about 10km per hour below the speed limit.

Not being good at conforming I continued at the speed limit and overtook the police vehicle. Not one other vehicle did likewise. It had me thinking about why that is? The only thing holding the other vehicles back was a mindset. There was no legal, moral or ethical reason why the other vehicles had to travel at about 10km per hour below the speed limit.

  • How often in our lives is our mindset holding us back?
  • How often do we not allow ourselves to achieve excellence due to our mindset?
  • How can we develop a mindset that frees us from limitations?

The Energy of the Morning

Have you ever noticed there is a certain energy in the morning? I find that there is a certain freshness in the morning. There is a clearness in the air. There is energy…. Especially after I go for a run. The morning is the best time for me to get things done. If there is a problem I need to work on or a task I am struggling with, then the mornings are the best time for me to tackle them.

Sometimes I will even start on something before I have a shower or have breakfast…. I get up and get stuck into the troubling task. So if you have a problem or a challenge that you are stuck on, then give it a go first thing in the morning. See if the energy of the morning works for you too. The Faith of Why Not

The other day I was asked why I believe what I do from a spiritual perspective. It was a good question. We are often asked in our lives to justify something or to answer why we did something. However, I got thinking is this the right question? Is justifying why we do something the right way to think?

My response to the question was “why not?” My answer may not have been expected, but it is the truth. Sometimes we need to consider living our lives and ask why we are not doing something. What is preventing us from having the faith in God, ourselves and others? Why not believe in God? Why not believe in ourselves? Why not believe in others?

When you have a Goal

My daughter has been working hard through the school holidays…. She has two jobs and also participated in fundraising activities. However, there is a reason for all her hard work. She has some big plans. When she mentioned that she wanted to go on the school trip to Italy, I responded with that sounds great, but I will not be paying for it.

In fact, I was not my normal uplifting self. I told her that it would be hard for her to raise the funds to go. I was not encouraging to her at the start. My daughter showed much courage and got a job anyway. She is paying for the trip herself. She has a goal and found a way to overcome the obstacles…. In this case the obstacle was money. When you have a goal anything is possible.

There is no Maintain

For Australia Day the family went to see the fireworks in Canberra and then afterwards we popped into the Pancake Parlour for drinks. While at the Pancake Parlour my son played chess with me. It was a tense set of three games. In the past I would easily beat my son at chess. However this time it was different…. My son has been playing the odd game of chess, while I had not been playing at all.

I won the first game comfortably after my son made some errors. Meanwhile the second went to my son. So it was down to the third game…. The winner of the third game would be the overall winner. So, we got started into the third game and my son took the my Queen early and was winning for most of the game. I somehow managed to win the third game, but only through an error on my son’s part.

It was a close set of games…. My son was very close to winning overall. I have often have heard that there is no maintaining in life, you are either moving forward or you are going backwards. This experience, playing chess with my son, truly proved that for me. May your passions drive you and your dreams lead you to fulfilling your life’s destiny.
