When you want to get a job done

National Awards 2016 at Old Parliament House for the Defence Reserve Support CouncilLast night I attended the National Employer Awards for the Defence Reserve Support Council. There was a number of businesses, government organisations and not for profit organisations that were recognised for their support of Defence Force Reservists. It was interesting to hear that despite the interruptions of employing a Defence Force Reservist there are many upsides.

The upsides are that you get someone with a can do attitude. Someone that performs well under pressure. Someone that is focused on getting the job done. Someone with high level leadership ability. In the end the employers all talked about how they get far more benefit from employing a Defence Force Reservist then the disadvantages.

It is a bit like the saying that “if you want something done, ask a busy person”….. May your passions drive you and your dreams lead you to fulfilling your life’s destiny.

Leading by influence

Thredbo - RunningAs I work with leaders and managers across a number of sectors I have come to realise there are two types of leadership power. The first is the traditional authority leadership power. Authority power comes from position and delegations within the organisation. Authority power is the leadership power that says you do this because I am your boss.

The second type of leadership power is influence. It is people following their leader out of respect. People want to be lead by their an influential leader and willing follow an influential leader. Though there are times that authority power is needed, for long term results influence works best. With influence you will get the best out of your team.

In the Gutter

Attila Ovari runnning on the streets of Canberra ACT AustraliaLast week as I was doing my usual run around the block I tripped. It has been a while since I have tripped over while running. I did a good job of tripping too. I was in the gutter and scrapped both hands and one knee. As I got up it was a cool morning and I just wanted to cry and go home…. I considered just licking my wounds and walking home.

However, as I looked at the gutter I fell in, I had a thought. What if I just pushed on? So, I got up and started running, finishing the run as normal. When I got going again I was feeling less pain. Maybe it was the adrenaline. We all get knocked down in life. It is not important the number of times that you get knocked down, but instead getting up once more than you get knocked down.

Moving up North

Virgin Australia Airplane at Sydney AirportI meet with a friend yesterday as he is moving to northern NSW next week. This has been a dream of his for a while. To escape the cool weather of Canberra. He has done it, just as winter is settling in, he is moving to warmer weather. The move did not happen by accident, there was plenty of obstacles to overcome, yet he has made his dream come true.

So how did my friend make his dream come true. Firstly, he knew what he wanted. He had a vision for what was to be. Secondly, he researched his dream. He worked out what was required to get there. Thirdly, he made a plan. The finally he implemented the plan. He did the work required, despite the setbacks along the way. An inspiration to us all.

The Mountain in Front

Namadgi - Rendezvous Creek 7In life we often come across an obstacle in our way. In our work and in our personal lives we often end up with a mountain in front of us. It can be discouraging when faced with a mountain on the way forward. However we can overcome the mountain and move forward. One piece at a time we can chisel away at the mountain or one step at a time we can climb over the mountain.

When faced with a mountain we can climb over it, we can go around it, we can tunnel through it, we can fly over it or we can move it. It will depend on the type of mountain, the size of mountain, to what method we use to overcome the mountain. Whatever the mountain, just know that there will be mountains in our lives and that we can overcome them, one small step at a time.

Being Cheerful

On the blood machine at the Red Cross Blood Service in Woden, Canberra ACTOn Tuesday afternoon I was on fire…. Not literally, but I was very very cheerful. I popped into the blood bank for my regular donation of plasma. I was cheerful with the staff, I was singing and whistling along all afternoon. Being cheerful is certainly a great way to live, not just for you, but also for those around you.

Being cheerful is like smiling, it not just has a positive impact on yourself, but also on others around you. Being cheerful is something that you can do for others. It is something that you can give away. Being cheerful also breds cheerfulness…. May your passions drive you and your dreams lead you to fulfilling your life’s destiny.

Safety or Risk

Misty road in the morning from fogThere is a certain comfort in being “Safe”. Being safe means being protected from danger or risk. It is normal to want to avoid danger. Danger can mean harm or suffering. No one wants to be harmed or suffer. Being safe is avoiding harm and avoiding suffering. However, is being safe the best way to live?

Risk is required to learn. Risk is required to grow and risk is required to develop. Without risk we can not achieve, we can not better ourselves and we can not live our purpose. So though there may be times that we require safety in our lives, there is also time that we need to live with calculated risk. May your passions drive you and your dreams lead you to fulfilling your life’s destiny.

What are you grateful for?

Girls on the Cha Cha at the St Anthony's School FeteIn our busy lives we can make things so complex…. In the complexly we can sometimes forget about the little things that we are grateful for. We can get caught up with things that go wrong. With things that are not perfect. Instead of enjoying and being grateful for the moment, we are so focused on the future.

Yes, we should strive for excellence and yes we should think about a better future. However this should not stop us enjoying the moment and being grateful for what we have. I see too many people that are sad about their life, as they do not see the good in the moment and the good they have achieved.

  • What are you grateful for right now?

Having a Slow Day

Evening Views in Chisholm ACT AustraliaWhat a fast paced world we live in. The other day I was talking with a friend about a time that I worked in an organisation where all of the management worked 60-80 hours a week. There are many people that work lots of hours, but it is efficient and is it effective? I dare say it is not…. I do not believe that it is any good for both one’s work or personal life.

Yes, I certainly understand that there are times that long hours many be required, however I do not believe that this should be the norm. If this is the norm for your life then it may be time to plan having a slow day. A slow day to recharge, reflect and work out a better way to work. May your passions drive you and your dreams lead you to fulfilling your life’s destiny.

Equally Loved

Gowrie - Holy Family ChurchOn the weekend as I sat in church and listened to the sermon, something struck me. The priest talked about how God loves us all with equal love. Equally Loved….. Not sure if you have a spiritual belief, but for me this was comforting. In a society where we place value on people for what they do, what they own, what they owe and where they live, it was comforting.

Imagine…. It does not matter who you are, what you do, what mistakes you make, you are valued. Imagine if we all equally loved each other, just as God does. Imagine if we all valued each other and our contributions. What would the world be like if we equally loved each other? May your passions drive you and your dreams lead you to fulfilling your life’s destiny.
