Leading and Managing
There is often much discussion about what is leadership and what is management. Some people say they are the same thing, others will tell you that they are different. Some people will tell you that Leadership is more important than Management. Others will hold the opposite view. Then there are another group that will tell you that both are required in the pursuit of a purpose.
So what are my thoughts? I believe that leadership and management are different from each other and both important in the ongoing pursuit of a purpose. In the short term either skill may suffice in the pursuit of a purpose, however if it is to be ongoing and last over the ages an organisation will require people within the organisation to lead and manage the purpose, people and processes of that organisation.
So what is leading? In an organisational sense it is the act of guiding people towards a common goal. Method and tools used for leading are communicating a vision, encouraging ownership by the stakeholders and empowering people to use their imagination and skills to achieve the purpose.
So what is managing? In an organisational sense managing is having authority and control. This authority and control is exercised through monitoring of KPIs or objectives, issuing directives and enforcing disciplinary action.
I believe that a leader or manager within an organisation will need to both lead and manage. The leadership for me is about inspiring and empowering people for the purpose and the managing is about ensuring that the people are on track for the achievement of the purpose and appropriate support is provided to them.
