How to get Work Life Balance

Around the place there is a lot of talk about work life balance. It seems that there are blogs, magazine articles and general talk about work life balance all over the place. I know I am not the best person to talk about work life balance as I am involved in so many things that I certainly do not have work life balance. However I am pondering:

Is there really such thing as work life balance?
How does one achieve work life balance?
How does passion for life fit in with work life balance?

At work this week I saw a sign up on the wall that talked about achieving work life balance. I think that no matter if you believe that work life balance is achievable or whether it is even your end goal these tips will contribute to a greater quality of life. The tips were broken into three parts:

  • Looking after your health
  • Take time out for yourself
  • Manage your time

Tips for health included both your physical and mental health. Both of these are important to maintain. Too much stress is one factor that can lead to problems both physically and mentally. On the other hand in order to maintain good health there are a number of things that we all can do to stay in top shape mentally and physically including:

  • Getting enough sleep
  • Eating right
  • Take time to relax
  • Exercise three times a week

Take time out for you, at least one hour a week. Doing something just for you will improve your wellbeing. This will also have positive impacts on your work, family life and relationships. And finally managing your time is also a way to also ensure that you lower your stress levels. Some of the tips from the sign are:

  • Create to do lists and prioritise tasks
  • Avoid time wasters such as surfing the web
  • Share the workload
  • Set time limits and boundaries

What is one thing you are going to do this week to look after your health?
What are you going to do this week as “Me Time”?
What is one tip are you going to do this week to help with your time management?

  1. After years of trying to achieve work/life balance I’ve begun to think it is impossible to achieve – and that its pursuit causes its own pressures. I’m trying, instead, to accept the fluidity of life and try for happiness. Thanks for your thoughts.

    • Happiness sounds like a great goal… I find that my happiness comes from an inner sense of satisfaction and achievement. Hence I think that I do not have a work life balance…

  2. Thank you for this post, and for reminding me to find a balance, even if everything seems to work against it. I’ll print out your last three questions and pin them next to my computer! Thank you very much 😉

  3. If you are happy and have found peace of mind in what you do, you have balance. Can’t ask for more then that.

  4. Reblogged this on no such thing as normal and commented:
I think you ahave to decide for yourself what kind of balance you want. You cna be advised by tohers but only you control your actions.
