Looking Back and Reflecting…

How many of you are running so hard that you do not release how far you have run? What have you achieved over the last twelve months? Have you taken the time to reflect back and review your achievements? Have you shared and celebrated your achievements with your team?

In Australia our financial year is 01 July to 30 June each year. This has been a perfect time to reflect back on the achievements at work and share them with my team. I must stress that the achievements are not what I have achieve, rather a list of achievements that we as a team have achieved. The list included:

  • Repairing and developing relationships with internal stakeholders
  • Reduced our Debtors by 80%
  • Implementation of a paperless billing system
  • Children’s Art Exhibition
  • Implementation of the National Quality Framework for Children Services across all our services
  • Provide a framework for staff at all levels to network with each other within the organisation
  • Commenced a program of Parental Forums
  • Developed relationships with an extensive list of external stakeholders
  • Establishment of a new integrated School Holiday Program
  • Move a program into a new stand-alone site
  • Transition a program to another organisation

Each of these are significant achievements in their own right, however as a group it is a great list of achievements. It was good to celebrate with the team and reflect on the list. These were also achieved in an environment where the staff felt support and the workloads remained reasonable. I myself was surprised by the length of the list. I too had been working head down moving forward and not realised all that we have achieved, until I reflected back.

I look forward to the achievements of the next twelve months as I know that we will achieve much. We have many plans and one by one working our way through them all in order to provide a consistently improving quality program.

So, what are you grateful for? Reflecting back over the last twelve months what have you and your team achieved? Have you shared the achievements with them? Have you celebrated?

  1. It’s quite true that we can put so much effort into aiming ever higher that we don’t notice how high we’ve come. Looking back over my last year, or even the last few months, I can see plenty of achievements — some small, some larger — that are well worth celebration, even if it’s no more extravagant than a happy dance of the heart.
I shall also endeavor to remember this message I recently came across: “Don’t wait until you’ve reached your goal to be proud of yourself. Be proud of every step you take toward reaching that goal.”

    • Thanks for your comment…. I like the “Don’t wait until you’ve reached your goal to be proud of yourself. Be proud of every step you take toward reaching that goal.”

  2. The other day a young friend asked me what had been the highlights of my (personal) year. I found it hard to remember what had happened and realised that I need to keep written track so I can have th epleasure of reflection.

  3. Thanks for this reminder. As you said, so often we just keep running without looking back, not realising that that taking note of achievements also helps with motivation and in turn contributes to future successes.

  4. thanks for the post….really got me thinking…its been a good year and time to be grateful for it…

  5. Congratulations! This is a great idea for a post. A lot of us don’t take the time to reflect what we’ve done – and it looks like your team did a lot.

  6. Good morning Attila, thank you for this post, it has reminded me that I have not done this with my team in quite a while. We have been going through some hard transitions since January shifting our office from paper medical charts to electronic. Extra work and frustration for everyone, yet we have accomplished a lot. I will sit down with them this week and count our blessings and accomplishments. Thanks for the reminder. 🙂

  7. the only team i have is god, me, and my brother. i often look back at the past 12 months and wonder what i have accomplised, and i barely see anything clear. i just know i have kept my brother out of the nursing home still

  8. Congratulations on all your achievements. I agree that it is important to look back so you can know how to move forward.

  9. for me the main achievement over the last 12 months has been to seek help for my depression. One small step for man one giant leap for ME!
